Telehealth can do more than convenience — it can expand access to care where it’s needed most.

A recent scoping review of research from high-income countries found that telehealth helps improve access to primary care for people in rural and remote communities by reducing long travel times, high travel costs, and logistical challenges that often make in-person visits difficult. In places with fewer local providers, telehealth connects patients with clinicians more easily, making it a valuable supplement to traditional care — especially for follow-ups and ongoing care needs.
