What does WIC offer?

WIC's goal is to help keep pregnant and breast feeding women, new moms and kids under the age of 5 healthy. To do this, WIC provides:

  • Personalized nutrition information, consultation and support
  • Checks to buy free, healthy food
  • Tips for eating well to promote health
  • Referrals for low cost/sliding fee scale medical and dental care, health insurance, child care, housing and fuel assistance, and other services that can benefit the whole family.
  • Access to Happiest Baby on the Block program classes and resources.
  • Breastfeeding support and assistance obtaining breast pumps.

But that's not all! WIC also offers immunization screening and referral, coupons for local Farmer's Market groceries, and nutrition and health workshops on a variety of topics including meal planning, maintaining a healthy weight, picky eaters, caring for a new baby, and shopping on a budget.

WIC is for all kinds of families: married and single parents, working or not working. If you are a father, mother, grandparent, foster parent or other legal guardian of a child under 5, you can apply for WIC for your child.

You can participate in WIC if you:

  • Live in Massachusetts (Outer Cape Health Services' WIC serves those who live in our eight town catchment area of: Brewster, Chatham, Eastham, Harwich, Orleans, Provincetown, Truro or Wellfleet). We will help refer you to other Cape based WIC programs if you do not currently live or stay in these towns.
  • Have a nutritional need (WIC staff can help you determine this)
  • Are a child under 5, a new mom, or a pregnant or breastfeeding woman
  • Have a family income less than WIC guidelines (shown below)

How do I apply for WIC?

It's easy! To apply for WIC, please call the Outer Cape WIC program at 508-240-0853 or

1-800-675-1188.
Outer Cape WIC has day, evening and Saturday appointments available and has offices located in Orleans, Provincetown and Harwich.
At your appointment, you will need to bring the following information:

  • Proof of current household income
Bring proof of income for everyone in your household. Examples of proof of income include pay stubs from recent check (within 30 days) or a letter from an employer. If you currently receive TAFDC, Food Stamps or MassHealth/Medicaid, you can bring proof of your participation on one of these programs instead of proof of household income.

Please Note: Not all plans of MassHealth are automatically income eligible.  If you are unsure about your income eligibility for WIC please talk to a staff member at Outer Cape WIC.

  • Proof that you live in Massachusetts
Bring documentation of where you live. Examples include a utility bill, a postmarked piece of mail addressed to you at your address, your lease or a rent receipt from your landlord, a bank statement, bank book or checkbook, or your drivers license or other ID card.

Please Note: If you do not have proof you live in Massachusetts, please talk to a staff member at Outer Cape WIC and they will assist you with documentation.

  • Proof of identity
Bring identity for everyone who will be on the WIC program. Examples include a driver's license, birth certificate, MassHealth card or a Social Security card.

Talk to the WIC staff if you are having problems bringing any of the above information. All information shared with WIC is confidential.
If you currently get TAFDC, Food Stamps or certain plans of MassHealth (Medicaid), you are automatically income eligible. Foster kids under age 5 are automatically eligible for WIC.
Outer Cape Health Services WIC Program is the proud recipient of state recognition as the program with the highest participant satisfaction among all Massachusetts programs in the most recent 2009 survey. We welcome your inquiries and look forward to serving you and your family.
